In September of 2019, after a two-year application process, the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), awarded Rendever a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I grant to test the potential for impact of their virtual reality (VR) platform with residents experiencing some form of cognitive decline and their adult children who live at a distance.

Rendever was approached by the Emerging Technologies team at Verizon to highlight an impactful use case for their new 5G network technology. Together, we tested simulated network conditions to determine bandwidth requirements in order to offer live streaming in virtual reality.

Rendever works closely with the UCHealth Experience and Innovation team to study the impact of VR on patients during a variety of treatments, and also on the anxiety levels of nursing staff. Throughout their network, UCHealth has Rendever systems in 18 locations, including burn units, outpatient infusion clinics, dialysis, and wound care.

Thanks to some quick collaboration between MassChallenge, the City of Boston, and the New England Patriots, our team was able to secure a spot on the very first duck boat in the Patriots Super Bowl LIII victory parade. This once in a lifetime video experience is now available to tens of thousands of seniors in the Rendever community.

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is the #1 hospital on the East Coast, having been named #2 in America by U.S. News and World Report. Rendever has been partnering with MGH on virtual reality research since 2018. In particular, we work with colonoscopy patients and offer them VR as an alternative to sedation. In this study, patients can choose to forego the use of opioids, and instead use virtual reality as a form of anxiety reduction and distraction therapy throughout the procedure.

MassChallenge is one of the most unique and impactful startup communities in the world. At zero cost and for zero equity, the MassChallenge HealthTech program provides promising startups with access to resources, mentorship, curriculum, and office space. Rendever was accepted into the 2017 program and ultimately won the Gold award, which included a $40,000 prize. Since participating in the program, Rendever has maintained a close relationship with MassChallenge and the partners we collaborated with throughout the program. We still participate in speaking engagements, events, and have been asked to judge / mentor startups currently participating in the HealthTech program.

Rendever partnered with Magnolia Bakery to deliver an unforgettable Valentine’s Day surprise to the residents at Stone Hill at Andover assisted living community in 2020. Thanks to this sweet partnership, Rendever customers and the seniors they serve got a behind-the-scenes tour of Faneuil Hall’s bustling Magnolia Bakery store and kitchen from General Manager, Sarah Wallace, who is also widely known for her recent appearance on Food Network’s Holiday Baking Championship.

Together with AARP, we were able to grant George’s wish in a somewhat unconventional way – through the power of virtual reality.
